Panel discussion on social networking

During today’s chapter meeting, Scott Ginnetti, Director of People Development and Baptist University at Baptist Hospital, and Jeff Harris, President of SkillQ,  consulting and training company, co-facilitated our panel discussion on social networking including an overview of Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The meeting had a great turnout, and everyone provided great questions and feedback.

The panel discussion centered around three questions:

  • How can training professionals leverage social networking to advance their career and increase professional relevance?
  • How can social networks and social media foster learning in the organization today?
  • What can we learn from the success of social network services that will help us structure learning opportunities in the future?

Among the best takeaways regarding using social networking as a business solution were to not ask how to use a particular tool, but to first determine your business needs. Additionally, Scott outlined six key areas that companies must keep in mind before turning to any tool, including social networking:

  1. Security
  2. Privacy
  3. Time & Productivity
  4. Define your ROI (Return On Investment)
  5. Access to technology
  6. Impact on those entering the workforce
